'Breathe Easier' to Crush Cars at California State Fair

SACRAMENTO - From August 11 through September 4, 2006, the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) will crush high-polluting cars nightly at 6:00 p.m. to promote the Help California Breathe Easier campaign.

On opening night, August 11, CalEPA Secretary Linda Adams will be on hand to deliver opening remarks and push the button to crush a high-polluting vehicle. Other officials joining BAR at the State Fair include Department of Motor Vehicles Director George Valverde (August 19), California Department of Food and Agriculture A.G. Kawamura (August 22), Department of Consumer Affairs Director Charlene Zettel (August 23-24), Business Transportation and Housing Secretary Sunne Wright McPeak (August 29) and State and Consumer Services Agency Secretary Rosario Marin (August 30 and 31).

Help California Breathe Easier is a public awareness campaign that was launched by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to help reduce air pollution in California. The campaign educates consumers about the negative health effects of vehicle pollution and promotes the retirement or repair of high-polluting vehicles that fail the Smog Check.

BAR's Consumer Assistance Program (CAP) pays motorists $1,000 to turn in their high-polluting vehicle and have it crushed, so that it is permanently taken off the road. Consumers can also receive up to $500 toward smog-related repairs to have their vehicle pass the Smog Check.
